Daniil Medvedev Wins First Masters Title in Cincinnati

Russia’s Daniil Medvedev won his first ATP Masters title in Cincinnati with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over David Goffin.  The win capped off a hot winning streak for the Russian heading into the US Open.

Medvedev beat Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and heads into the US Open high on confidence.  He appears to be the hottest next gen star at the moment given the troubles that fellow next gen players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Sascha Zverev, and others are having.

“To finally lift the trophy this week is an amazing feeling,” Medvedev said. “Congratulations,” Goffin told him, “and I think you’re ready for New York.”

Goffin continued, “He’s super solid. He doesn’t miss. It’s like playing against a wall. Just playing cross, cross, wait for the ball. His pace is not too fast, not too slow. It’s quite a special pace to play against him. And then you receive bombs coming from his serve, and then he doesn’t miss. That’s why everybody is struggling, because he’s so consistent, now with more confidence.”

Goffin summed up the part of Medvedev’s game that bothers so many players.  He is sloppy (in a good way), exploits your weakness, counter punches and can be powerful when needed.  Not an easy player to play against.
