Denis Kudla was born in Kyiv, Ukraine to Ukrainian parents. His family moved to the US when he was one. He picked up tennis because his brother Nikita played the sport. He trained at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, Maryland, when he was young.
Kudla had a good junior career. He reached the 2010 US Open boys’ singlefinal, where he lost to Jack Sock. He reached a world ranking of 3 in the juniors. Though he had an interest from the University of Virginia, Kudla skipped college and turned pro. Kudla’s idol growing up was Roger Federer though he modeled his game after Spaniard, David Ferrer. His best grand slam performance has been reaching the third round, which he has done multiple times.
