Yulia Putintseva was born in Russia but has been representing Kazakhstan since 2012. She has reached the quarterfinals at a grand slam multiple times in her career.

She trained at the Mouratouglou Academy in Paris. She was introduced to the sport by her father. Her brother Ilya is an ice hockey player.
