Wu Yibing became the first Chinese player to win an ATP title. Yibiling beat local favorite John Isner 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 7-6(12) to win the Dallas Open title title. Isner hit 44 aces in the final but still couldn’t pull off the win.
China is a huge market for tennis and Yibing’s success would help the game grow in China. Speaking of Wu Yibling, Isner said.
You’re gonna be a bright spot for the sport of tennis in the future.
Yibing will move to his career-high ranking of world number 58 becoming the highest-ranked Chinese men’s player in tennis history.
During the trophy presentation ceremony, Wu Yibing said
I made history here for my country and for my home. I’m very proud of myself and especially thanks to all the fans and my team who came here to support me. I couldn’t do this without any of you guys.
It was a dream week for Yibing. He beat Michael Mmoh, Denis Shapovalov, Adrian Mannarino, Taylor Fritz, and finally John Isner to win the title.
