Wimbledon has been canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the All England Club announced on Wednesday.

This is the first time Wimbledon Championships has been canceled since World War II in 1945.  It is also the first time that the tournament has been canceled during peacetime.

Wimbledon reportedly has a pandemic insurance policy and will be covered financially unlike the French Open.

To players expressed disappointment at the announcement but many also underscored that it was the correct decision considering the widespread disruption to life caused by the coronavirus epidemic.

Roger Federer, who will be almost 40 in 2021, expressed his huge disappointment at the announcement.

Simona Halep seemed happy to be a reigning champion for two years.

USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the home of the US Open is being transformed into approximately 100,000 square feet of supplemental hospital space as New York City fights the coronavirus pandemic. The Billie Jean King National Tennis Center has 12 indoor tennis courts.

The second-largest stadium on the grounds, Louis Armstrong Stadium will be used to prepare and distribute meals for 25,000 people every day.

New York has been one of the hotspots of the pandemic in the United States.

“It’s an incredibly small part, but it’s the least we can do,” said USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Chief Operating Officer Danny Zausner.

“Elmhurst Hospital in Queens is a stone’s throw away from the tennis center. For us to be in the local community where our hands are tied, but to support the local community and help take some pressure off of Elmhurst Hospital is a huge thing for us to help out in any way we can.”

The Aqueduct racecourse, located in Queens like the NTC, has also been converted into a temporary hospital to respond to the coronavirus epidemic.
