2020 Tokyo Olympics: Alex Zverev Shines, Novak Djokovic Fades, Belinda Bencic Carries Switzerland

No medal for Novak Djokovic

The biggest tennis news from the 2020 Olympics was that Novak Djokovic left Tokyo without a medal. The dreams of a golden grand slam were gone.

He lost his singles semifinals match to Alex Zverev. He also lost the bronze medal match against Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta. Djokovic pulled out of the bronze medal mixed doubles match giving Ashleigh Barty and John Peers the bronze medal.

Needless to say, it was a great week for Alexander Zverev. He played great all week. The three-set format helped him close out matches quickly and didn’t give players like Djokovic to come from behind and win in 5 sets.

Great Olympics for Switzerland and Russia

Belinda Bencic won the gold medal in singles and silver medal in doubles, making this an Olympics to remember for Switzerland even though Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka didn’t play.

It was also a great tournament for the Russians, who were competing under the name, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). Karen Khachanov won the silver medal in singles. ROC won the mixed doubles gold and silver medals. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev were gold medal winners.

Olympic Medalists In Tennis (UPDATED)

For most players, winning a medal for their country is as good as winning a grand slam. But between 1924 and 1984, tennis was excluded from the Olympics. Thankfully, it was re-added in 1988.

Steffi Graf won the golden slam in 1988- winning the Olympic gold medal in singles and winning all four grand slams.
