Marketa Vondrousova surprised many pundits by winning the Wimbledon singles title beating Ons Jabeur. She is the first married women’s singles champion since Chris Evert in 1981.
In fact, Vondrousova and her husband celebrated their first wedding anniversary at the Wimbledon Champions’ ball on Sunday. Interestingly, Ons Jabeur is also married, so no matter the match’s outcome, a married woman would have been a Wimbledon champion.
In 2019, Vondrousova reached the finals at the French Open where she lost to Ashleigh Barty in a lop-sided match. She had mediocre results in the four years after that final. But she was a more mature player at Wimbledon this year.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she won the silver medal in singles. She lost the final match to Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic.
