Have you noticed that French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova wears the same outfit on court week after week? She won the 2021 French Open title but she is still sponsored by Head for apparel because she is not able to attract sponsors like Nike or Adidas.
Big brands like Nike, Adidas, and Lacoste introduce new clothing for major tournaments. Top players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic even get unique outfits – outfits that are not worn by players even if they are sponsored by the same brands.
A company like Head, known more for its racquets and balls than its apparel, can’t afford to do that. They give players a certain number of outfits and players reuse them throughout the year.
But shouldn’t a grand slam champion be able to attract more sponsors? Sponsorship is a tricky game. Marketability is not correlated with on-court results. Players such as Amanda Anisimova can attract $100 million sponsorships because of their looks and where they are from (United States).
We hope that a big brand will pick up Barbora Krejcikova soon. We don’t want to see a grand slam champion wearing the same outfit week after week.
