Alexander Zverev Wins Second ATP Finals Title, Grand Slam Title Next?

Alexander Zverev ended 2021 on a high note by winning the Nitto ATP Finals title beating Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4 in the final. Since winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, Zverev has won 32 of his 36 matches. He also won a tour-leading six titles in 2021. A grand slam title in 2022 looks inevitable if his current form is any indication.

Speaking after his win, Zverev said:

Things couldn’t be much better, to be honest. I’m obviously happy with how the season went. I’m happy with the finish of the season. It was obviously a great year. To capture the title here has been incredible. Give me the trophy.

This was Zverev’s second World Tour Final title. He also won the title in 2018 in London. Zverev lost the round-robin match to Medvedev this week after having a  match point but the final wasn’t close as Zverev dominated from the first point.

The ATP has been investigating Alexander Zverev for domestic abuse after allegations were leveled against him by his former girlfriend Olya Sharypova. In any other sport, Zverev would have been suspended until the conclusion of the investigation. But tennis let him continue to compete and Zverev made the most of it. Zverev has been able to focus on the court despite his off-court issues.
