Akira Santillan was born in Japan but his family moved to Australia when he was eight years old. His mom is Japanese and his dad is South African of Spanish descent.
Santillan played his junior tennis n the Gold Coast before moving to Brisbane to train at the Queensland Tennis Centre. As a junior, he was ranked as high as world number 17. Though he currently plays for Austria, he has a tough relationship with Tennis Australia. He briefly represented Japan before returning to represent Australia.
Due to his low rankings, he has been mostly playing on the Challenger circuit. He is sponsored by Babolat. He has earned over $1 million in his career.
