Dmitry Tursunov helped take Anett Kontaveit’s game to the next level. She rose to world number 2 under his watch but Kontaviet announced that she has split with Tursunov.
Kontaveit and Tursunov started working together last fall before the Western & Southern Open. The split was amicable but surprising given the good results Kontaveit has had in the past year.
Tursunov, speaking about the split, said:
I feel proud of the work I put in and a bit sad but sometimes good things must come to an end
Despite rising to world number 2, Kontaveit has struggled to break through in grand slams. Her best grand slam result came at the 2020 Australian Open where she reached the quarterfinals.
Tursunov is widely regarded as a good coach. He previously coached Aryna Sabalenka and helped her reach the top 10 in the world.
