Juncheng Shang Fires Marcelo Rios As Coach

Rising Chinese tennis star Juncheng Shang had impressive results under coach Marcelo Rios, the former world number 1 player. Shang won the Challenger title win in Lexington and reached the final at Granby Challenger. But that partnership is now over as Shang’s family fired Rios just a few weeks after signing a one-year coaching contract.

In recent matches, Juncheng Shang was warned by umpires for receiving coaching from Rios. But Rios says that Shang’s parents are too involved in Shang’s tennis and that there were differences of opinion in coaching methods.

Martin Alund, who was previously Shang’s assistant coach will now be the fulltime coach after Rios’ departure. Shang reached the boy’s singles final at the US Open in 2021. He trains at the IMG tennis academy in Florida.

Though Rios won 18 singles titles n his career and reached a grand slam final, he never won a grand slam title but was ranked number 1 in the world.
