The start of 2022 season has been a crazy time for tennis fans. Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis are grand slam champions after unexpectedly winning the 2022 Australian Open doubles titles in an impressive fashion. They beat the world number one doubles team of Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic in the second round.
Kyrgios got into a war of words with his fellow Australian Max Purcell who partnered with Matthew Ebden to reach the final before losing to Kyrgios and Kokkinakis. Purcell wasn’t too happy about the huge support Kyrgios was getting during his matches.
Purcell said:
I think it was great for ticket sales here, but I’m not so sure how it was taken overseas. If you’re watching some of Nick and Thanasi’s matches earlier in the week and you’re overseas, maybe you get turned off tennis a little bit.
But Kyrgios was having none of it and called Purcell “a donut”. Kyrgios commented:
As for @maxpurcell you donut, regarding your comments after the match you clearly have no idea about entertainment and sport.
If you haven’t noticed there is a reason why people actually come to my matches, it’s because the level and my game are actually worth watching.
