Jannik Sinner Makes History – Youngest Ever Italian To Win An ATP Title
Jannik Sinner won his first ATP tour title at the Sofia Open on Saturday. He beat Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3) in the final.
With his win, Jannik Sinner, who is 19, became the youngest ever Italian to win an ATP title. He also became the youngest player to win an ATP title since 2008. Kei Nishikori won the Delray Beach title at age 18 in 2008.
Interestingly, Sinner won the title at his last tournament of the year in 2019 at the Next Gen Finals but ATP doesn’t consider it a tour-level title. This year too, he wins his last tournament of the year.
Sinner said:
It is always special when you win tournaments. I felt well this week. It is special. Playing finals like this, 7-6 in the third… is always tough. But when you win, it is an even better win than winning 6-1 6-1… I am happy about the match, how I tried to stay there at every point and I think it is a very special week for me.
Sinner will finish the year ranked No. 37 in the world, his career-high ranking.
