Tommy Paul was born in Voorhees, New Jersey but his family moved to North Carolina when he was 3. Paul grew up playing on clay courts in Greenville, North Carolina. He was ranked world number 3 as a junior. He won the 2015 French Open boys’ title by beating Taylor Fritz.
Paul won his first title at the Stockholm Open in 2021. He entered the Top 35 in world rankings in 2022. At the 2023 Australian Open, he achieved his best grand slam result by reaching the semifinals. His favorite player growing up was Andy Roddick.
