Is Andre Agassi coaching Marcos Giron? Rumors have been swirling for a while, fueled by Agassi’s occasional appearances in the stands during Giron’s matches.
However, the truth is that Agassi is more of a mentor—a role that has proven invaluable. Since 2020, Giron and Agassi have been working together, though Agassi doesn’t have any official position in Team Giron. Instead, he provides a wealth of advice and insights, acting as a crucial sounding board to help Giron elevate his game.
Giron’s recent victory at the Newport title is a testament to this mentorship. He clinched his first title by defeating Alex Michelsen with scores of 6(4)-7, 6-3, 7-5, and Agassi was there to witness this milestone moment.
Reflecting on their partnership, Giron shared,
The more time I spend with him, I realize he’s just a pretty face,” he joked during his on-court interview. “No, honestly, the guy’s unreal. He’s really the nicest guy I’ve ever met. His knowledge is incredible, so it’s really, really special. He’s somebody I looked up to growing up, and it’s really amazing. He’s even better in person than you can imagine.
Giron also revealed that they keep in regular contact.
We’ve been in communication. We text, we call. Not every day, but he is always super friendly and insightful. Every now and again, I go out to Vegas, and it’s really an amazing thing.
Giron’s journey in tennis began at UCLA, where he won the NCAA Division 1 singles title. With his recent triumph in Newport, he is set to climb to world number 38—a career-best ranking.
