How Seeded Players Are Placed In Draws At Grand Slams?

Men’s and women’s singles draw at grand slams have 128 players. The top seed and the second seed will play either the #3 or #4 seed in the semifinals.

32 players are seeded in the tournament based on their ranking. Being seeded gives players the opportunity to go deeper in the tournament because the seeding guarantees that they won’t run into top players in the early rounds.

How does the seeding system work?

Top 2 seeds

#1 seed is placed at the top (left)

# 2 seed is placed at the bottom (right)

Seeds #1 and #2 can only meet in the final.

Seeds 3 and 4

#3 and #4 seeds are placed randomly to meet #1 or #2 in the semi-finals.

#1 seed could play #3 seed or #4 seed in the semifinal. Similarly, #2 seed could play #3 seed or #4 seed in the semifinal.

Seeds 5 through 8

Seeds #5 through 8 are randomly placed in the top or bottom half. They will meet seeds #1 to #4 in the quarterfinals.

Seeds 9 through 12

Seeds #9 through #12 are randomly placed to meet seeds #5-#8 in the fourth round.

Seeds 13 through 16

Seeds #13 through #16 are randomly placed to play seeds #1 to #4 in the fourth round

Seeds 17 through 24

Seeds #17 through #24 are randomly placed to meet seeds #9 to #16 in the third round

Seeds 25 through 32

Seeds #25 through #32 are randomly placed to meet seeds #1 to #8  in the third round.
